🔸 Event Background: Biodiversity has long been one of the key issues in sustainable development. Its importance lies in maintaining ecosystem stability, providing essential resources for human survival, and contributing to both economic and cultural value. Biodiversity supports critical ecosystem services such as food supply, medicine, water quality, and climate regulation. If biodiversity is lost, it may lead to severe consequences, including food shortages, environmental pollution, and an increase in infectious diseases. Wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems on Earth, second only to tropical rainforests. They include estuaries, mudflats, mangrove swamps, lakes, ponds, and other water-rich environments, with mangrove swamps being among the most iconic. However, due to limited human perspective, wetlands have often been undervalued and regarded as land with little economic benefit. As a result, they have faced development, exploitation, and destruction, leading to severe ecological impacts. Yet many may not realize that migratory waterbirds play a crucial role in connecting and sustaining wetland biodiversity across the globe. Beneath the seemingly quiet mudflats lies a thriving network of life, where countless species interact, shaping ecosystems far beyond our sight. Wetlands are far from “wastelands.” In fact, Taiwan’s wetlands are internationally recognized sanctuaries for migratory birds and rare species. But what gives Taiwan’s wetlands such remarkable ecological value? This lecture will help you understand what wetlands are, which precious bird species rely on them, what adorable crabs inhabit these shores, and what unique plants thrive in these habitats. Join us to rediscover wetlands and transform your perception of these extraordinary ecosystems.
